When the creator the world made the animals, he gave them lovely clothes to wear.
He gave some animals fur to wear. He gave a shell to Tortoise and scales to fish. But he made birds last and forgot to make them any clothes.
The birds were very could not fly. They had a big meeting to talk about it. Eagle was king of the birds.
‘’All the other animals have clothes to wear and can keep warm,” he said
‘’One of us must go up to the sky to ask the Creator for some clothes’’ said Eagle. ’’I must stay here to rule all the birds. Most of you are too small, I think we should send vulture.”
All the other birds agreed that Vulture was the best bird to send. Vulture was kind and fair. He always looked after the other birds and helped them make nests. The Creator would listen to Vulture and give them some clothes.
“How will I get there? I cannot fly,” said vulture.
“Have a go,” said Eagle.
The Creator had heard the birds talk. He wanted to help Vulture – suddenly, Vulture could fly.
Vulture flapped his wings and he took off into the air!
Vulture flew up to the Creator’s palace in the sky. The Creator was waiting for him. He listened to vulture.
“It is true that I forgot to make your clothes. I was in a hurry,” said the Creator.
Look what I have for you,” the Creator said.
He took Vulture to a room. The room had lots of pegs on the walls. On every peg, there was a suit of beautiful clothes made of feathers.
“You can choose the suit of clothes that you like best,” said the Creator. “But you can only try on each suit once. If you don’t down choose the suit, it will fall down to earth for the other birds to put on.”
Vulture was very excited. There were so many lovely clothes to try on. Some had blue feathers, some had yellow and some had red. Some had lots of colours. He had never seen so many colours.
“How can I choose? There are so many,” he thought. “ I want the very best clothes. I must look better than Eagle. Then all the other birds might make me king of birds instead of him!”
The first suit of clothes that Vulture took from a peg was a beautiful shiny green. But it was too small so he threw it down to earth.
Hummingbird put it on and it looked lovely on Hummingbird.
The next suit was soft brown colour.
“Brown! How dull! “ said Vulture.
He threw it down and Nightingale took it. He was a shy bird who did not like to be seen while he sang beautiful songs.
“Pink is too bright!” said Vulture looking at the next suit of clothes.
“I wonder who will want that!”
Flamingo wanted it.
“How beautiful!” said Flamingo as she pulled the pink feathers round her.
The next suit of clothes was pure white. “ I would get too dirty in this,” said Vulture, trying it on.
He threw it down to earth and Dove found it. She would keep it lovely and clean.
“This looks just right,” said Vulture excitedly.
He took down a red and gold suit of clothes but he dropped it.
It dropped down to earth, so he couldn’t try it on. Goldfinch was very happy to have it.
The next suit was all black.
“Who would want to wear black?” he said, as he threw it down to earth.
“Black suits me very well,” said Crow.
He grabbed it as it came down.
“Red is pretty, but not with brown!” said Vulture, as he looked at the next suit.
It fell through the sky and landed on top of Robin, The other birds laughed.
“You look very jolly in that!” they said.
He tried on a suit of red, yellow, blue and green.
“This is a bit too colourful!” said Vulture. “ I know who will want this!”
He was right.
“That must be for me!”said Parrot.
Vulture did not want the next suit. It was brown with a white cap.
“I would not look like a king in this,” he said.
But he was wrong. Eagle looked like a fine king when he put it on.
There was only one suit left!
It was not nice at all! It was a dull brown-black colour.
Vulture put it on but it was too short for his legs. The cap was ot there so his head was still bald.
Vulture flew back to earth. All the other birds had a party, but yulture did not go.
Vulture went off to the hills by himself. He did not want to be seen in his new clothes.
